Monday 16th March – Hike (snow shoe) **** sunny periods – Roche Pallud nearly to the Grotte de Jourdy – 6 n. miles

We did exercises then after breakfast we set off on our snow shoes through the woods next to the van. It was great – we made our own tracks to start with then met some other snow shoe tracks and followed them for some of the time. But the best tracks were the animal ones we have never seen so many and I did see the back end of a deer disappearing down through some rocks. We came out near the Roche Pallud lifts which are now closed as the piste has gone:( We walked down across what would have been the piste and met the path down to the Grotte de Jourdy which the lady in the tourist office told us was not possible in the winter. We thought we would just go that way and see what happened. Well after a short way we took our snow shoes off and hid them behind a tree – I made an arrow out of some branches so we knew where they were:) We carried on in just our walking boots and the path soon turned into a typical French scramble down a sheer rock face with cables to hang on to and no signs! It got really quite scary and Mag did fall over a couple of times. There was some snow down the ravine which we managed to negotiate by stepping into somebody else’s footprints! When we had gone what felt like a very long way we decided we must have either missed it or gone wrong somewhere so we started to retrace our steps. There was a small cave and I scared Mag half to death going over to it with rocks and loose leaves flying off down the cliff! There was lots of chamoix pooh but we didn’t see any:( When we were back to the cabled section a woman in a bikini top appeared stomping up from the bottom! She told us the Grotte was only 5 minutes further on from where we stopped – so we didn’t go far enough!! We weren’t tempted to try again and decided her 5 minutes was probably our half hour! We stopped for our lunch sitting on a narrow ledge nearly back at the top. Reunited with our snow shoes we walked back up to the Roche Pallud lifts and I decided to walk up the drag lift to the top (echerus). Mag thought I was completely mad and came back to the van, which was still quite a steep hike, and watched me through binoculars. The views from the top were great and although it was a struggle I was glad I made the effort. Back to the van for a cuppa and cake then we walked down to the village by the road, and back up the piste, to check the weather forecast.
